If there's such thing as an 'ultimate cookie' it's quite hard to find in California. If you've never tried a McVittie's Chocolate Digestive, you're soooo missing out. Do they make you 'digest' things better? I dunno about that but they're quite delightful. The best way for me to describe it is a moist graham cracker coated with chocolate. I had my first digestive in London and it was love at first bite. I would consume a pack a day and I just couldn't kick the habit. I would stash as many packs as could fit in my luggage as I headed back home but sadly the day would come when they would all be consumed. Amy was determined to find a store in the US that sold digestives- albeit at a price premium. We found Cost Plus World Market in Oakland, CA to carry an assortment of European food items. $3.99 is quite steep for a small pack of cookies but it undeniably makes the perfect complement to any cup of Peet's coffee any time of day.
I remember a time from my childhood when I got a plate full of assorted homemade cookies as a Christmas gift and exclaimed to my parents that "these are all mine! all mine!" and refused to share them with anyone. As I got older, I realized how childish and selfish I was and vowed to share my goodies. Unfortunately, my newfound digestives have rooted me back to my selfish ways....

If you're in/near Oakland, you can also get them at Berkeley Bowl and (I think) Monterey Market (both in Berkeley)
